Method

This is a scenic exercise for two people.

It is closely related to Say one thing, do another but the thing you are doing is EXTRAORDINARY.

Start a scene with two improvisers chatting about something they're interested in.

Once the conversation is going add a physical, scenic element - perhaps they are superheroes or defusing a bomb?

The scene continues in the extraordinary situation but with the conversation being ordinary, domestic stuff.

Teaching notes

Combined with Yes yes YES these scenes tend to be very positive.

The scenes work best when you hardly mentioned what you are doing at all but you can also play with something like a 5%/ 95% split.

In addition, if you're talking about mobile phones and the scene is set in medieval times, there's a nice game to be played whereby the specifics of the EXTRAORDINARY element bleed into the truthful conversation stuff. What is the medieval equivalent of a mobile phone?

Examples:

Cops on a stakeout

Snipers on a roof

Strapping someone into an electric chair

Dragons on a pile of gold

Godzilla mid-Tokyo attack

Two astronauts repairing the ISS
