Method

This is a gesture pass game.

So everyone has a phrase and gesture based on a theme.

The theme can be as easy as “Names in the group”. In this instance, everyone will say their name and make a gesture that symbolises them.

You can then pass the impulse around the circle by saying your own name and then someone else’s, whilst doing the appropriate gesture.

Alyssa to Ben. Ben to Samantha.

You can then add additional categories - the eponymous one being “things that you might hear in New York”. So stuff like…

“Hey, I’m walking here! [gestures wildly with hands]

You can then mix and match categories - or do them all at the same time.

Teaching Notes

As ever, momentum is important in this game. If people stop and think about it too much the game will grind to a halt.

Categories can be anything - I had one which was “Things you might hear from a beaver colony whilst building a dam.”

Make the phrases short and memorable and the gesture distinct from others in the group.
