Method

The group stands in a circle.

One person selects an emotion in their head and steps forward.

They move across the circle towards another player.

Every step they take intensifies the emotion they are feeling and displaying.

So if the whole range of human emotional intensity lies within a scale that runs from 1 to 10 - they start at a 1 and progress to 10 by which time they are standing in front of another performer.

At that moment, at the very height of their emotional intensity, they utter the immortal words.

It's Tuesday...

The other person replies:

That's right. It is Tuesday. And you're feeling [emotion] because you're [explanation for that feeling]

The second improviser then decides on a new emotion and begins to move across the circle.

Teaching notes

The person who is being walked towards can mirror the emotional intensity, so by the time they are standing face to face, they are both ANGRY or HAPPY or whatever.

Worth remembering Jill Bernard's "primary colours" of emotion - Glad, Sad, Mad and Afrad.

Many people might not be able to get to a 10 emotional state. This is fine and entirely understandable. But it's interesting to see what your personal comfort range is.

You might be endowed with a different emotion than the one you were going for - THAT'S IMPROV!

When coming up with an explanation for the emotion - remember to make assumptions and give your scene partner a gift - there are no right answers.
