Method

A pair of improvisers sit facing front on two chairs.

They are playing characters who are in bed together.

The teacher tells them to fall asleep.

On the command "Good morning, fuckos" they wake up and look into each others eyes.

They are not allowed to pre-decide what their relationship is, it all comes from that moment of eye contact.

We then see the first 3-5 minutes of that couple's day.

Teaching notes

You don't have to be clever.

You don't have to be funny.

It's simply the first few moments of that couple's day.

The point is that you don't pre-decide anything. You trust in your partner and you trust in the process.

This is one of my favourite exercises of all time - AND you have to remember that not all people who wake up in bed together are sexually involved - there are a whole bunch of reasons why you might end up like that.

But a bed does presuppose some basic level of intimacy. Which is why it works so well.

I tend to remind people of these rules before every scene so that people don't play it for laughs or try to create a plot.

I've been known to call it "Good morning, sunshine" or simply "Good morning" depending on the group.
